Invisalign® Q & A

What are Invisalign braces?

Invisalign “invisible” braces are a newer orthodontic option; these are clear, removable braces customized just for you. Invisalign is practically invisible and conveniently removable, which keeps food from getting trapped in your teeth. Clear braces, like Invisalign and other brands, are very popular these days, particularly with adults.

How does Invisalign work?

Clear plastic trays are molded to fit over your teeth. They move your teeth just like traditional metal brackets and wires do, but they do so more gently, so you don’t experience any pain or discomfort. And since the transparent trays are removable, you can take them when you brush and floss your teeth.

You’ll still have to visit Pinole Family Dental every 4 to 6 weeks to get your new trays and for the orthodontist to check your progress. However, more severe problems -- like closing large tooth gaps or correcting excessive tooth crowding -- are better suited to metal braces.

How long do I have to use Invisalign?

You wear each clear aligner for approximately two weeks and only remove them for eating and brushing. Adults typically wear Invisalign braces a little longer than standard braces, ranging from 18 months to 3 years.

Do any treatments come after Invisalign?

After you finish your Invisalign treatment, Dr. Mandi might want you to wear either a removable or permanent retainer to complete your treatment and ensure your teeth don't shift. Good dental hygiene is vital for both braces and retainers and is the best way to ensure you don’t wear braces any longer than is necessary.

Am I a good candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is best for adults with mild spacing problems. In other words, this treatment method is best for cases where your teeth require slight shifting. And since adults tend to stick with the routine of wearing and removing the trays better than teens do, this is an excellent option for that age group.
